The Measure of Things is a temporary exhibition for summer at Akaroa Museum.
You know that Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers, but do you know how big a peck is? What country tried and failed to decimalise time? Heard of the Queen’s chain but not seen a chain? Do you know why an Imperial pint is more refreshing than an American one?
Akaroa Museum’s summer exhibition The Measure of Things can answer these questions and questions you’ve never thought to ask.
Everyday life has always been easier when we have known how many or how far. This exhibition considers how maps, clocks and other measuring instruments have helped us navigate, describe and quantify the world. It also explores some of the ways this technology has conditioned us to think within the boundaries of its definitions.
Akaroa Museum is open every day except Christmas Day from 10:30am until 4:30pm.
10.30am to 4.30pm,
seven days a week.
